Somalia’s Electoral Future: What Young People Want from Dialogue, Consensus, and Reform

Sixth Session of the 2026 Youth Dialogue Series Held in Mogadishu

Balqiis Insights convened the sixth session of its 2026 Youth Dialogue Series in Mogadishu to examine the future of Somalia’s electoral process and the role of dialogue, political consensus, and institutional reform in supporting credible and inclusive elections.

The discussion explored the challenges and opportunities surrounding Somalia’s electoral transition, including the prospects for One Person, One Vote, the importance of political agreement among key stakeholders, and the institutional preparations required to support the electoral process. Participants noted that electoral reform extends beyond technical arrangements and remains closely linked to broader questions of governance, legitimacy, and public confidence.

Participants also discussed the implications of ongoing political and constitutional debates, including the relationship between the Federal Government and Federal Member States, the future of women’s political representation, and the role of young people in shaping democratic reform. The conversation highlighted the importance of inclusive dialogue and broad-based consensus in advancing sustainable electoral reforms.

The session concluded that credible elections will require effective institutions, political consensus, and sustained public engagement. Participants agreed that meaningful youth participation remains essential to supporting democratic governance and strengthening public trust in Somalia’s electoral future.
