Fourth Session of the 2026 Youth Dialogue Series Held in Mogadishu
Balqiis Insights, in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), convened the fourth session of its 2026 Youth Dialogue Series in Mogadishu to examine the growing pressures facing the Somali Shilling and their implications for inflation, economic activity, and public confidence in Somalia’s financial system.
The discussion explored how persistent price volatility and the widespread use of foreign currency continue to shape economic life across the country. Participants noted that the challenges facing the Somali Shilling extend beyond exchange rate fluctuations, reflecting broader concerns related to monetary governance, institutional effectiveness, and the credibility of the national currency. The conversation highlighted the close relationship between monetary stability and public confidence in financial institutions.
Participants also discussed priorities for strengthening Somalia’s monetary framework, including enhancing the role of the Central Bank, improving policy coordination, and promoting greater use of the Somali Shilling in public transactions. The need for stronger financial oversight and increased public understanding of monetary issues was identified as essential to supporting a more resilient financial system.
The session concluded that restoring the role of the Somali Shilling will require sustained commitment, effective institutions, and credible reforms. Participants agreed that a stable and trusted national currency remains an important foundation for Somalia’s broader economic development.
